UPDATE:
We've selected our 2010 Person of Courage Award recipient! Who is
it...?? Come to SEE-ME 2010 to find out about this most deserving
individual! 2010 Person of Courage Award sponsor is Classic Subaru of Atlanta! Background on the Henry C. Forrest, Jr. "Person of Courage" Award: Every year in the endurance and multisport community, we are witnesses to tremendous athleticism and achievements. But there are a select few that tend to perhaps stay out of the limelight, never make the podium, and would rather excel in the not so traditional manner. In 2008, the annual Atlanta triathlon pre-season expo (formerly called "CTEP") introduced the "Person of Courage" award. The first year recepient was Henry C. Forrest, Jr. from Grayson, Georgia. While Henry's fame may have come as one of the original 15 participants in the Hawaiian Ironman, his legacy was to the many lives he touched in the 30 years beyond that first endurance triathlon. Henry lost a valiant fight to pancreatic cancer in November, 2008, just a couple weeks after participating in ceremonies that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first Ironman competition in Kona, Hawaii. It is very appropriate that we perpetually honor the first "Person of Courage" recipient by naming the award after him. "I had the honor to be one of the 15 men who ran the first Ironman Triathlon in 1978. I feel privileged to have been at the right place and at the right time to take advantage of that opportunity. It’s laughable how little training I had going into that event, and little did we know that it would be the birth of a new craze – the beginning of extreme sports! Some of those 15 men are good friends of mine, and I treasure those friendships. - Henry Forrest" Henry retired from the US Marine Corps with 20 years of service. He taught Boot Camp classes at the Colony Square Athletic Club in Atlanta, and served on the neighborhood watch team for Wisteria Place Subdivision in Grayson, GA. He is a former Police Officer in Kennesaw, GA and a Vietnam Veteran. 2009 Henry C. Forrest, Jr. "Person of Courage" award recipient: Denise Novicki Denise Novicki, president of Tri2Remember (Georgia), accepts the 2009 award from Morgan Clark, president of All3Sports, and Mike Lenhart, SEE-ME executive producer.
